The guys over at Chud (original article here) have released that Lawrence Kasdan has been commissioned to write a draft for the live-action adaptation of Robotech. Tobey Maguire is set to star.
SlashFilm has this description of the Robotech universe:
"Robotech refers to the scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island. With this technology, Earth developed giant robotic machines or mecha (many of which were capable of transforming into vehicles) to fight three successive extraterrestrial invasions..."
I don't know much about Robotech. The reason this story stuck out for me was due to my watching of The Monster Squad last night. Eugene, the youngest of the squad, who usually shows up out of nowhere, was wearing a Robotech shirt during the scene where he is trying to convince his dad there is a monster in his closet. The shirt held my attention for long time, and I think it was because I was racking my brain trying in a failed attempt to remember anything about Robotech.
Lawrence Kasdan is responsible for scripting The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. He is also the father of Jake Kasdan, director of Orange County and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Kasdan is the man. I'm not sure about Robotech though. After reading that description on it, the plot sounds an awful lot like Transformers... and that movie was a piece of garbage. However, with Kasdan at the helm, maybe it will turn out alright. Nice call on the Monster Squad still.
