Hollywood's Retrogress Affects Tuesday

A long time ago, I used to look forward to Tuesdays. Not just because it is the day after Monday, but it is also the universal day of release for everything new in the entertainment world. New DVD's, CDs and Video Games are all released on Tuesdays. So why has the once highly anticipated Tuesday suddenly lost all meaning? The answer can be found amongst last weekend's (Sep 5 - Sep 7) box-office numbers.

Last weekend, The Dark Knight continued its onslaught on the box office, raking in a cool $5mil for 3rd place as it tries to stay afloat and battle the mighty Titanic. Tropic Thunder, Ben Stiller's best and deserving effort, took 2nd place with just over $7mil. This leaves the top spot to none other than the new, uninspired, unnecessary remake of Bangkok Dangerous which pulled in an underwhelming $7.8mil and once again showing consumer confidence in movies is low and somewhat misguided. And the rest of the top 10 is just as disappointing with The House Bunny, Babylon A.D., Death Race, Disaster Movie, and Mamma Mia! all managing to make enough bank to prove my point.

The reason I say all this is because the movies I just mentioned above will be released on DVD in 6 months or less. The movies from around 6 months ago are being released on DVD today including, Baby Mama and a legion of other brain sucking releases not good enough for the theater. The cycle is a self-perpetuating turd fueled by the egotistical money whores that run Hollywood's studios. Do you see where I am going with this?

Tuesdays are no longer exciting. We no longer have reason to look forward to this otherwise pointless day. And it is Hollywood's fault.

I am looking forward to the Tuesday that The Dark Knight comes out. Does that count?

Of course The Dark Knight Tuesday will be amazing and a welcomed breath of fresh air. It just sucks that we have to suffer in order to make it to that date. But that Tuesday will most definitely be a special one for all the reasons against Tuesdays in general mentioned in the post.

I'm guessing your issue is with the now diminished wait times from the theater to DVD? If so, what does that have to do with this weekend's box office?

Regardless, I generally agree with you. Tuesday's don't mean all that much anymore. Though that might just be because you (and I) are getting older and finding the Tuesday events to be less of a priority.

When I mentioned this weekend's box office, it was simply to show that Hollywood continues to release terrible movies and to give a head's up on the new Tuesday releases we have to look forward to. As for the ever shortening gap between theater releases and DVD releases, that wasn't really something I was trying to hit on.

Ah, the overal quality complaint. I can agree with that, too.

Well, I don't like the super-short gap, anyway. How can we anticipate and wait for something if it never leaves our consciousness? I guess the net/piracy is the problem.
