It appears that Warner Bros. wants the domestic box-office record as much as we do. But then again, the January re-release of The Dark Knight into IMAX theaters may truthfully be just a healthy Oscar season reminder for the Academy.
The Dark Knight has only been in theaters for two months, and it is already the second highest grossing movie of all-time in the United States. But it's stock has quickly fallen, and at a time when DVD release schedules sometimes keep people from going to the theater in the first place, it is starting to look bleak for our winged friend.
When Titanic was released, it was in theaters for 9 months with no DVD in sight. It took 90 days for it to even cross the $500 mil mark. And while The Dark Knight accomplished the same feat in half the time, it only made $5 mil last weekend. Now with the DVD right around the corner, The Dark Knight's theatrical run is slowly coming to a close. This weekend, it is sure to make at least a few more million as it is still in 2100+ theaters, but look for it to fall off the radar soon after that.
I want The Dark Knight to sink Titanic as much as the next guy. And I want to celebrate with all of those who care about deserving films getting all of the credit and glory. But I don't know if this is going to work right now. If Warner Bros. plays their cards right, we may see The Dark Knight take the crown in 3 or 4 years. But I don't believe that this new re-release will be extensive enough to do any real damage so soon after the theatrical release and close to a month after the DVD release.
What do you think?

I think the re-release will get it over the Titanic's $600 million. If it doesn't, it will definitely get it pretty close. One thing's for sure- I'm going to see it again and finally in IMAX. I can't wait. You don't get second chances like this often in life.
I want it to cross that mark as much as you guys, fo sho. But I just wanted to point out that YDKS is sitting pretty at number 95 in the Top Blogs race, so congrats on that, but let's try and make it in the top 50 at least. Whatever it takes. Domination.
It will get reach the mark in future re-releases, but January is not going to get it to $600 mil.
