Monster Fest Video of the Day #3

Since it is Monster Fest here at YDKS Movies throughout the rest of the month of October, I figured I would try and start a new daily article (school work pending, of course) that features movie clips from various horror films. After all, what better way to celebrate Monster Fest than to watch video clips of cinema's greatest monsters?

When I had Austin make the poster for Monster Fest, I made sure he included a picture of the Roger zombie from the original 1978 version of Dawn of the Dead. Why, you may ask? Well, first off, if you haven't seen Dawn of the Dead, you need to go out and get a copy immediately. And no, the flashy and vastly overrated remake by Zack Synder does not count at all. George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead, to me, is the zombie movie to end all zombie movies. It has some nice scares, a fairly epic scope (especially for the limited budget), an ample supply of social and political commentary (especially in regards to materialism and consumerism), a creepy atmosphere and setting, an awesome score by Goblin, lots of zombie mayhem and gore and a great cast of characters. The film manages to be quite disturbing at times and fun at other times. It really has everything you could ever want from a zombie film.

Anyways, getting back to the Roger zombie- to me, the sequence where Roger transforms into a zombie was always one of the most effective scenes in the film. It's pretty heart wrenching to me (and many other fans) because it takes Roger so long to actually die from his zombie bites (and the process of seeing him undergo this is pretty tough to watch) and that it is his close friend Peter that actually has to finish him off. Although it is not included in this clip, the scene before this where Roger explains to Peter that he is going to try and not come back when he eventually dies makes this scene even more tragic.

Despite the scene being pretty sad, it is also very creepy. The way that Roger finally turns under the sheets of the bed and then how he slowly pulls the sheets off his head has stayed with me for years. And how about that zombie make-up by Tom Savini? Man, he looks creepy. Overall, a really great monster moment in a really great zombie film.

Also, be aware that the clip goes on much longer than it should after Roger's death.

I hope you guys enjoyed that. There should be at least one more Dawn of the Dead video on the Monster Fest Video of the Day article in the next few weeks.
