The Watchmen Trailer

If for some reason you haven't seen The Dark Knight yet, then you probably haven't seen the first trailer for the Watchmen. If you have seen The Dark Knight, then you should instantly know what I'm talking about. Not many trailers are as eye opening and geek-tastic as this one. Unlike most first trailers for a film, the Watchmen trailer gives the audience a look at basically everything that they could want to see and all the major characters such as Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, The Comedian, Night Owl, and many more.

The trailer is essentially a visual feast- no story elements are really explored and only money shots are really shown. While it's definitely moving to see, it does have to make you wonder about director Zack Synder and if the film is going to be anything more than just money shots (that's all 300 pretty much ended up being). He definitely seems to be falling into the same directorial traps that he has fallen into in the past (random uses of slow motion and fast motion can be seen in the shot of The Comedian going through the window and on the attempt on Ozymandius' life) and this was something that I was pretty worried about. Watchmen was not only one of the most complex graphic novels that I've read but it was also one of the deepest. While it definitely appears that Synder can pull off the visuals of the graphic novel on film, I still have my doubts on whether or not he can fully tackle some of the novel's deeper and more complex aspects.

Still, despite my doubts about Synder, this trailer definitely works on what it's going for. Like I stated earlier, the thing is just a visual feast that is greatly aided by the use of the song "The Beginning is The End is The Beginning" by The Smashing Pumpkins- a song that was ironically apart of the soundtrack of Batman and Robin, one of if not the worst superhero movies ever made. Still, I've always liked the song and it really makes the visuals of the trailer much more powerful and, at times, haunting. Mr. Manhattan truly looks beautiful and the shot of him vaporizing a guy in Vietnam is pretty awesome. Plus, what about the ending of the trailer showing the construction of Dr. Manhattan's fortress on the surface of Mars? Talk about epic.

Even if Synder does end up failing in regards to the story's complex plot, one things definitely for sure: the visuals of the movie are going to end up looking simply gorgeous.

For those of you not familiar with the story of the Watchmen, check out the synopsis below (because the trailer definitely doesn't give any hint of the plot):

"A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the watchmen?"

I haven't read the graphic novel, but I plan to before the film's release. I am like you and did not really jump on the 300 bandwagon, but the trailer does look sweet, and my interest is definitely peaked!

I look forward to reading this. However, I enjoy a pithy film like 300 every once in a while, so maybe I'll enjoy it even if it is all for show and not much story. It's the novel that counts, right?
